Saigon was a noisy, busy, crazy, amazing city. The streets were packed with taxi's and motor scooters (thousands of them), a bicycle here and there, and very few cars(just about every car was a taxi). The scooters often had multiple people on them - a common sight was seeing a family of 4 or 5, kids sandwiched in front, in between, and behind the adults. If not multiple people, then multiple things - packages and pipes and who knows what, piled high and strapped on. People squatting on the stoop or sitting in the gutter selling fruit and soup and other Vietnamese food. Small, narrow 'stores' filled with every-day household items and trinkets, soup-kitchens, and clothing. We walked up and down the sidewalks, taking in the sights and sounds and plenty o'smells, meanwhile, trying not to get hit by the scooters and cars that have no regard for which side of the street they are on, which lane they turn into, or whether there are people on the sidewalk they are parking on! It was clear that road signs and traffic lights are mearly suggestions.
